2007 was a another good year at the shows for seedlings
with Red Wrekin, Angel Islington, Red Square, Red Rook, Deuce of Hearts and Little Amber all winning at NAPS shows for the first time. Of those varieties that have been around a while Coventry Street, Russian Roulette, Trafalgar Square and Fleet Street had a successful year. Seedlings from 2005 crosses due to the lateness of pricking out were in the main too small to flower in the Spring of 2007 as they should have. They are now definately flowering size plants and should produce show size trusses in 2008. Seed from 2006 crosses was sown at the end of January 2007 and the strongest 320 were pricked out into cells in June 2007. If I had the space to give them good light and better growing conditions they should also flower in Spring 2008. The 2007 crosses were harvested in July, August and September 2007. There was less seed than last year but still plenty. New additions to the collection were Fairy Queen and Fairy Light from Cliff Timpson; and Censored, Lolita, Smoothy, Laptop, Stormy Weather and Mr Wonderful from Derek Parsons. Also Fanfare, Fine Art, Amore, Hot Lips and For You again from Derek Parsons. I have labelled Fanfare "Derek's Fanfare" to avoid confusion with the existing fancy Fanfare which I also grow. With space as always in short supply 2007 will have to be the year of the big cull. I finally got round to some serious repotting during the first week in October and luckily hit a spell of good weather. I have about sixty plants still to do, but these will have to wait until February 2008. All available space is now used up. So a minor cull, of any plants that are not thriving, is due in the late Winter or early Spring of 2008 to make room for sowing the next batch of seed and potting on existing seedlings. |
